The Center for Advanced Research in Information Security (CARIS) was established in November 2001 to better respond to the increasingly critical security needs of our nation’s electronic infrastructure. The Center is located in the University’s Department of Computer Science, which has been designated by the US National Security Agency as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance. CARIS focuses its research on next-generation infrastructure security technologies. Through its research findings, the Center increases university and community awareness of information security issues, and strives to influence appropriate and effective public policy in the area of information assurance. The work of CARIS is of particular relevance given current security difficulties: frequent virus and worm outbreaks, threats of cyber-terrorism, and increasingly complex and costly security architectures. CARIS challenges current assumptions about security architectures and methodologies and establishes new areas of research related to integrated security technologies. One key to success for CARIS is the ability to form strong partnerships among industry, multiple disciplines within the University, and other governmental institutions. The Center is therefore structured to make partnerships a natural and fundamental mode of operation. Only through close partnerships can the benefits of university level research, informed by current needs in the industry, be effectively transferred into the public marketplace and widely deployed. Close partnerships are also requisite for open pathways to governmental policy makers and public awareness. Mission StatementThe University of Illinois Center for Advanced Research in Information Security will be the world leader in information assurance through
in the areas of infrastructure and information system security.
